The 2016 NCAA Baseball Tournament’s first weekend featured 101 games in the round of 64. The field has now been whittled down to 16 teams paired off into eight super regional sites, where they’ll play a best of three head-to-head series for the right to go to Omaha for the College World Series proper.
Opening weekend saw a handful of upsets send some powerhouses packing. No. 7 national seed Clemson got rocked twice by Oklahoma State in their home stadium, even after dropping 15 runs on Western Carolina in their first elimination game Sunday. Virginia, last year’s CWS champ, also flamed out Sunday, losing a heartbreaker to William & Mary in their Charlottesville regional.
Vanderbilt, Virginia’s finalist opponent in last year’s championship tilt, had certainly the most difficult opening weekend in the country, losing teammate Donny Everett in a tragic drowning accident on the eve of their regional opener. The Commodores went on to lose back-to-back games Saturday and were eliminated from their own Nashville regional before it really began.
Unlike the regional round, every game of the supers will air on TV, with all games also available for streaming via WatchESPN.
