AUSTIN, Texas—An early Cardinal lead proved too much to overcome as Texas Baseball fell 11-1 to Stanford on Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (4-3) and the Cardinal (5-3) finished with a split in the four-game series.

In the first inning, two walks and a balk came back to hurt sophomore starter Connor Mayes (0-1). The righthander issued two free passes and gave up an infield single to load the bases. With two outs, Stanford’s Matt Winaker lifted a two-run single to right that preceded a run-scoring balk.

After the opening frame, however, Mayes settled in, allowing just three more hits and no walks over the remainder of his outing.

Texas’ lone run came in the bottom of the fourth when, with Kacy Clemens on first after singling, Travis Jones ripped an RBI triple to right-center.

After a scoreless inning of relief by Travis Duke, Stanford’s offense picked up in the sixth off a handful of Longhorns relievers. The Cardinal added a pair of runs in the sixth, three in the eighth and three more in the ninth thanks to a Jonny Locher home run.

Texas Baseball returns to action on Tuesday night when it travels to San Marcos for a 6 p.m. game against Texas State.
