Earlier this month, former Eagles quarterback Tim Tebow announced that he would be pursuing a career in professional baseball — and the Phillies, it seems, are listening.
As USA Today reports, the Phillies have confirmed they will send a scout to observe Tebow next week in Los Angeles, where he will hold a workout Tuesday for interested baseball teams. Over the past several months, Tebow has been training in Los Angeles and Scottsdale, Ariz.
But don’t take that scout’s attendance as a guarantee that you’ll be seeing Tebow on the field at Citizens Bank Park anytime soon. More than 20 teams have confirmed sending scouts to the workout, ESPN reports. And, as Jim Salisbury at CSN Philly writes, the scouts attending Tebow’s workout are “practicing due diligence by taking a look at an accomplished athlete.”
Salisbury also points out that “Southern California is loaded with amateur baseball talent, so many scouts live there.” Star Phillies alumni such as Cole Hamels and Chase Utley are natives of the area, so the team has a history of watching SoCal for good talent.
Tebow, 29, last played baseball as a student at Nease High School in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., where he maintained a .494 batting average and was an outfielder and pitcher. Tebow was also honored as an all-state player in his junior year in the mid-2000s after the school’s baseball team reached the state semifinals, but he began focusing on football after that season. He later was nearly drafted by the Los Angeles Angels out of high school, according to the NFL, but plans fell through.
The former Eagle has never played baseball beyond the high school level. After his run in the sport, Tebow switched to football, playing for the Florida Gators in college, and then the Denver Broncos and New York Jets in the NFL. His last pro football experience came last year at Eagles training camp; the team released him in September 2015.
