Rewinding Auburn baseball’s 2-1 win vs. No. 5 Florida as Tigers clinch SEC-opening series – AL.com

Auburn baseball and No. 5 Florida return to the diamond on Saturday afternoon for the second game of their three-game weekend series to open SEC play.

Auburn aims to clinch the series after throttling Florida, 14-3, in the series opener on Friday night. The Tigers (15-5) will start right-hander Casey Mize (2-0, 0.40 ERA) while the Gators (13-6) are going with right-hander Brady Singer (2-0, 1.50 ERA). First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

Top of the 9th:

— Lipscomb gets Florida in order to record the save and clinch the weekend series. 

Bottom of the 8th: Florida 1, Auburn 2

— Andrew Baker comes on for Singer and gets Auburn in order, including a pair of strikeouts. 

Top of the 8th: Florida 1, Auburn 2

— Lipscomb leads off the inning with a hit-by-pitch, but then he gets an easy 8-3 double play on a fly ball to center field. Runner took off on contact and had no chance to tag up at first before the throw reached Daniel Robert.

— Cole Lipscomb comes in from the bullpen to take over on the mound for Auburn.

— Casey Mize’s day is over: seven innings, five hits, one run (unearned), eight strikeouts and just one walk. He threw 96 pitches, with 65 going for strikes.

— Auburn strands Jarvis at second.

— Luke Jarvis leads off the inning with an infield single. He advances to second on a grounout by Damon Haecker. Will Holland up with Jarvis in scoring position.

Top of the 7th: Florida 1, Auburn 2

— Florida 1, Auburn 2: Gators get a run off the bat of Deacon Liput, who grounds into a 6-4-5 double play, but the runner at third crosses the plate before Auburn gets the second out in a rundown.

— Catcher’s interference loads the bases for Florida. Butch Thompson out to the mound for a visit, but Mize is staying in the game.

— Mize records his eighth strikeout of the day, which sets a new SEC career high for the righty. He now has 45 strikeouts to just four walks this season.

— Nelson Maldonado with a leadoff double against Mize, who had him in a two-strike count before allowing the hit. This is the same part of the lineup Mize struggled with in the fifth. 

Bottom of the 6th: Florida 0, Auburn 2

— Another 1-2-3 inning for Singer against Auburn’s bats. He has allowed four hits through six, but he’s at 93 pitches.

Top of the 6th: Florida 0, Auburn 2

— Mize gets back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. He has seven strikeouts today and no walks.

— Impressive diving stop at second followed by a throw to first from the ground by Will Holland to get Dalton Guthrie out to open the inning. Holland has been making the most of his opportunities as a freshman.

Bottom of the 5th: Florida 0, Auburn 2

— Four-pitch inning for Brady Singer as he gets Auburn in order in the frame. 

Top of the 5th: Florida 0, Auburn 2

— Mize gets Andrew Baker to ground out to first base. Tigers somehow worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fifth. Incredible recovery after the mound visit by Thompson. That has to be deflating for Florida.

— Mize then gets Deacon Liput to foul out near third base as Anthony makes the catch in foul territory. Two down and bases still loaded.

— Auburn gets a force-out at home on a short chopper toward third that Josh Anthony makes a nice, charging play on to get Mark Kolozsvary at the plate. One down, bases loaded still.

— Make that three straight singles to load the bases with no outs. Butch Thompson coming out to chat with Mize and the rest of the infield.

— Back-to-back singles by Nelson Maldonado and Christian Hicks to open the inning against Mize.

Bottom of the 4th: Florida 0, Auburn 2

— Damon Haecker draws a walk, but Will Holland grounds into an inning-ending double play.

— Florida 0, Auburn 2: Luke Jarvis doubles down the third-base line to score Estes from second. 

— Jay Estes with a one-out double. He’s 2-for-2 on the day and now 4-for-5 on the weekend.

Top of the 4th: Florida 0, Auburn 1

— Mize with another clean inning. Just like last inning, he gets back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame. He’s got five on the day. Florida’s Nos. 1-4 hitters are 0-for-8 with four strikeouts.

Florida 0, Auburn 1: Todd scores on Singer’s second balk of the inning.  

— Jonah Todd leads off the third with a walk against Singer. He advances to second on a wild pitch, and Auburn has a runner in scoring position for the second inning in a row. Todd then advances to third on a balk.

— Mize with a clean third inning, which includes back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame. His final pitch of the inning touched 97 mph on the radar gun.

Bottom of the 2nd: Florida 0, Auburn 0

— Holland flies out to right field and Auburn strands three in the inning. 

— Jarvis singles and the bases are loaded for Damon Haecker. Auburn threatening against Singer. Haecker strikes out looking, which brings Will Holland to the plate. Holland had four RBI on Friday night, including a two-run homer.

— Dylan Ingram reaches first on an error with one out. Grounder to third, but Jonathan India’s throw pulls first baseman JJ Schwarz off the bag. Jay Estes follows with a single to short to put to on for Luke Jarvis.

Top of the 2nd: Florida 0, Auburn 0

— Mize works around the two-out hit, keeps Florida scoreless. He’s at 24 pitches through two innings.

— Mize gets his first strikeout of the afternoon against JJ Schwarz, then gets Nelson Maldonado to foul out on a nice tracking catch by Daniel Robert down the right-field line. Gators get their first hit of the day off the bat of Christian Hicks, who reaches on an infield single off the glove of Mize.
