KINSTON, NC (WCNT)- Kinston hit a minor road block in the process of bringing professional baseball back to Grainger Stadium.
A contract between the Texas Rangers ownership group and the city allows a minor league team to call Grainger Stadium home in 2017. What the contract does not specify is which team it will be. The original plan was to bring the Wilmington-Delaware blue rocks to Kinston because another team would take their place, but that deal fell through.
Kinston City Manager Tony Sears said, “There was a two step process that was going to bring baseball back to Kinston and unfortunately, step one, which had no involvement with Kinston, did not go through. That kind of affected step two which was bringing baseball back to Kinston.”
Sears says he is very confident baseball will be back in 2017. The City and Rangers organization will sit down in January to figure out the next steps.
