Listen, we know it’s tough to catch up on everything happening in the baseball world each morning. There are all kinds of stories, rumors, game coverage and Vines of dudes getting hit in the beans every day. Trying to find all of it while on your way to work or sitting at your desk just isn’t easy. It’s OK, though, we’re going to do the heavy lifting for you each morning, and find the things you need to see from within the SB Nation baseball network as well as from elsewhere. It’s time to discuss baseball fashion here at Say Hey, Baseball. Major League Baseball loves to show off their patriotism at every chance they get, and since yesterday was the Fourth of July, MLB couldn’t wait to show off their latest tribute to our beautiful country. Across the league, every team wore either a red or blue cap with the American flag sublimated onto the crown. There were white stars on either a red or blue background of the team name and numbers, and an American flag on the right sleeve.
Is it a patriotic look? You bet your bald eagle it is. Is it tacky? Yes, it’s hilariously tacky. Granted, this type of uniform works extremely well for the multitude of teams that already have a red-white-and-blue color scheme. However, when teams like the Giants, Marlins and A’s have to get in on the fun, then things just start looking strange. Seriously, who wants to see the Pirates in red hats? The White Sox nearly pulled off a throwback look, which was a strange coincidence. Either way, the entire thing is weird.
There’s a solution to this problem (that all 12 of us uniform nerds care about), and it’s painfully simple: Just put an American flag on the hats and on the right sleeve. That’s it. It’s simple, but it’s still the best and most tasteful way to pay tribute to this great country of ours. They last did this as recently as 2011 and did so commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, and it’s still the best way to show patriotism. The teams get to keep their individual looks, and the entire thing comes off as less of a cash grab and more authentic. The Fourth of July and baseball are a great combination, and it’ll be a great Independence Day when the baseball teams go back to looking, well, independent of each other.
- Bryce Harper played with a star-spangled bat on Independence Day, and ended up hitting his 25th homer of the season. Nobody can doubt that this man loves his country.
- C.J. Cron contributed six RBI to the Angels’ cause on Saturday as they absolutely thumped the Rangers, 13-0.
- Jeff Locke was masterful for the Pirates on Saturday. In an effort to prove that he wasn’t the “weak link,” he pitched eight innings of shutout ball. That’ll do the trick.
- The Braves are trying to unload 3B Chris Johnson in a manner similar to how they got rid of Melvin Upton: If you want one of our good players, you’ve gotta take one of our bad ones as well.
- Stephen Drew hasn’t exactly been effective for the Yankees this season, and the fine people over at Pinstripe Alley believe that it’s time for the Yankees to move on.
- Miguel Cabrera is going to be on the DL for six weeks. Does this mean that the Tigers are now going to be sellers at the trade deadline?
- Baltimore slugger Chris Davis nearly hit a home run to tie the game against the White Sox in the ninth inning. Avisail Garcia made sure that the ball didn’t go over the fence and did so in spectacular fashion.
