Southern to rename baseball fieldhouse in honor of former coach Roger Cador – The Advocate

The Southern University Board of Supervisors approved the baseball fieldhouse to be renamed the Cador Baseball Operations Center last week in honor of longtime head coach Roger Cador.

The official unveiling of the name change will take place at a ceremony on a later date to be decided.

Cador spent more than 30 years at the helm of the Jaguars before retiring at the end of last season after building Southern into one of the most storied and well-respected HBCU programs in the country.

During his tenure, Cador oversaw the building of both the baseball stadium — known as Lee Hines Field — and the baseball fieldhouse. Prior to his arrival, Southern practiced and played at Pete Goldsby Field, which is owned by the city.

“The other (honors) are about championships I’ve won,” Cador said. “This one is about the lives that I’ve touched and the reputation I’ve built. It means a lot more than all of that.

“To get to this point you have to accomplish a lot of things: winning championships, graduate kids, build strong community leaders. Those are the things that allow you to get to some building or monument named after you. You have to do a lot of good things and you have to be able to stand the test of time.”

Cador especially thanked the parents and players he worked with over the years who helped him achieve so much.

Cador said the renaming was first proposed by board member Raymond Fondel and immediately seconded by university president Ray Belton before being approved by the whole board.

Cador finished with a career record of 913-597-1, a dozen 30-win seasons, 11 NCAA regional appearances, 10 All-Americans, three NCAA regional wins and 62 players drafted by MLB teams by the time he retired.

After his retirement, Cador remained with the school as the director of athletics advancement, a newly created position that puts to use Cador’s fundraising and people skills to help continue to grow Southern athletics.
