House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., has been upgraded to fair condition and continues to make progress in his recovery from a gunshot wound to the hip last week, MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Wednesday.
MedStar Washington Hospital Center provided the latest update on Scalise’s condition and said the Louisiana Republican “continues to make good progress.”
“He is now listed in fair condition and is beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation,” the hospital said.
Scalise was shot through the hip last week in a shooting at the GOP’s practice for the annual congressional baseball game.
He sustained a rifle shot to his left hip, and the bullet fractured bones, injured internal organs and caused severe bleeding.
When Scalise entered the hospital, doctors said there was “imminent risk of death,” but the Republican has continued to make progress over the last week.
He underwent a series of surgeries and doctors last upgraded his condition from critical to serious condition Saturday.
James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Ill., opened fire on Scalise and a group of GOP lawmakers, congressional staff and lobbyists holding baseball practice in Alexandria, Va., last week.
Hodgkinson also shot congressional staffer Zach Barth, Tysons Food lobbyist Matt Mika and Capitol Police special agent Crystal Griner.
Griner and Mika also remain in the hospital.
Hodgkinson died when he exchanged fire with Griner and her partner, Capitol Police special agent David Bailey, who both serve on Scalise’s security detail.
