Teen Sentenced in Deadly Shooting of Baseball Prospect in NY Burger King Lot – NBC 10 Philadelphia

An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for last year’s fatal shooting of a baseball prospect in a suburban New York parking lot.

The Journal News reports Nashaun Hunter was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to a reduced charge of first-degree manslaughter. Two others have already been sentenced in the shooting.

Hunter’s lawyer called the shooting a terrible and tragic mistake.

Michael Nolan was declared dead last October. Authorities say the shooting outside a Burger King in Yonkers stemmed from a dispute over a drag race.

The Oakland Athletics drafted Nolan, a Yonkers native, out of Oklahoma City University. He was placed on the restricted list on July 14, 2014, and never pitched in an official Minor League game.

At last month’s sentencing of two other men in the shooting, Nolan’s mother, Donna Nolan, scoffed at those who asked if she would ever forgive the men who killed her son. 

“When I hear about five families being destroyed, no. Because they still get visits, they get cards, they get care packages. They get all that,” she said in Westchester County Court. “They get to see their mothers on Mother’s Day, or write a card and say, ‘Mom, I love you.’ Well you know what, heaven doesn’t have visiting hours. I don’t get that,” Nolan said. 

“I hope each and every one of them rot in hell for what they did to my family,” she said. “Do not ever forget my son’s name!”

A fourth suspect, Garth O’Neil Cole, is expected to be sentenced this month. 

Authorities said that Hunter was the one who fired a gun six times at Nolan as he stood in the parking lot of the Burger King in Yonkers. Nolan was hit in the head and torso. The shooting came as a retaliation to a beating during a drag race two nights earlier. 

Nolan was placed in a medically induced coma after the shooting; he was declared dead on Oct. 9.
