David Pierce has made his first mark as the new head coach of the Texas Longhorns baseball program. Lakefield Centennial outfielder Kamron Fields announced Thursday has he has committed to play baseball on the 40 acres.

This is a massive commitment for a class that has been sorely lacking. Fields will be only Texas’ sixth 2017 baseball commit, and he fills a huge need for the ‘Horns, as Texas is currently very thin at outfield.
Fields announced earlier Thursday afternoon that he has decided to pursue baseball rather than football. This is a bit of a surprise, as he is a three star dual-threat quarterback with at least 10 scholarship offers, including Iowa, Indiana, and SMU. At 6’3, 185 pounds, he has size and power, but also brings speed and athleticism to the base paths.
As a junior, Fields won “Offensive Most Valuable Player” for the 11-6A district in baseball. He was also a member of the SportsDay All-Area First Team, of which former Longhorn commit Kyle Muller was the player of the year. Fields’ commitment could be the first step of Pierce’s plan to rejuvenate anemic Longhorn bats. Pierce’s Tulane team hit 66 home runs in 2016, compared to Augie Garrido’s Texas team, which had 34 on the year.

Texas is now ranked as the 52nd baseball recruiting class for 2017 by Perfect Game USA. Fields’ commitment is only the beginning of a major rebuild necessary after a disastrous 25-32 season for the ‘Horns. However, after a stressful coaching search, Pierce has earned a chance to celebrate.
