Texas baseball signee Kyle Muller struck out the first 18 hitters he faced Monday and finished with 21 strikeouts in eight innings as Jesuit beat Irving 3-0.
By striking out 18 in a row to start Monday’s game, then getting the first out in the bottom of the seventh on a strikeout after allowing a single, Muller had recorded 36 outs in a row on strikeouts over three games. The streak ended there, as a double play grounder ended the seventh inning.
In his previous start, Muller recorded all 15 outs on strikeouts while pitching a five-inning no-hitter against Sunset on March 18. One hitter reached on an error in that game. In his start before that, Muller struck out the final two hitters of the game in a 5-1 victory against Prosper on March 10.
On Monday, Muller took a perfect game into the bottom of the seventh and had struck out all 18 hitters before Irving’s Noah Salinas led off the inning with a single. Muller struck out the next hitter to give him 36 straight outs on strikeouts over three games before the double play ended the streak.
Salinas’ single was the only hit that Muller allowed, and he didn’t walk anyone. Muller threw 101 pitches, according to Jesuit’s GameChanger box score.
For the season, Muller is 4-0 with a 0.42 ERA. In 33 innings, he has struck out 66 and allowed three runs (two earned). He also leads the Dallas area in home runs, having hit 12 in 23 games for Jesuit (17-4-2 overall, 5-0 District 9-6A).
With Monday’s game in extra innings, Muller hit an RBI triple in the top of the eighth to give Jesuit a 1-0 lead. Jared Kengott hit a solo home run to cap a three-run top of the eighth for Jesuit.
