CLEARWATER, Fla. – Joe Davis hit his third home run of the tournament, but the University of Houston produced little else at the plate in a 7-2 loss to Connecticut on Sunday in the American Athletic Conference championship game.

The loss likely ends the season for the Cougars (36-23),who entered the game on the bubble to make the NCAA Tournament. The AAC is expected to receive only three bids: Tulane, East Carolina and UConn.

Davis led off the sixth inning with a solo home run – his 14th of the season – and the Cougars added another in the seventh. UConn lefthander Anthony Kay, the AAC’s pitcher of the year, was in control for most of his six innings of work.

UH went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

The Cougars had the tying runs on base in the eighth. UConn reliever Patrick Ruotolo struck out Jacob Campbell to end the threat.

Bobby Melley had a two-run homer off UH starter Andrew Lantrip in the third inning.

UH committed three errors in the game.
