Now, we know the names.

The new, semipro independent baseball league stadium in Utica will be Jimmy John’s Field. The league to play out of the stadium, set for opening day in June 2016, will be United Shore Professional Baseball League.

Officials from Macomb County, Utica, the state and General Sports and Entertainment broke ground today on the $12-million project that is to be on the site of a capped brownfield that was formerly an unlicensed dump for household waste.

The stadium at Auburn and Moscone will seat about 4,000 people and include a grandstand, five dugout suites, five penthouse suites, 12 private patio suites, a grass berm and four picnic areas, according to a release from the county.

The project is being privately funded and led by the entertainment group out of Rochester.

There will be three teams who will play in the league. Each team will play a 50-game season for a total of 75 games per season, according to the release.

The players are to be young overlooked ones, mostly with college experience, who haven’t made it into the major league system, Andrew Appleby, chairman and CEO of the entertainment group, said in the release.

Jimmy John’s, a gourmet sandwich chain, and United Shore, a mortgage lending company based in Troy, are the official naming rights partners of the ballpark and league.

The land is owned by the Utica Downtown Development Authority and will be leased to the entertainment group. The site also will be home to community events.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is providing a $1-million Clean Michigan Initiative Brownfield Redevelopment loan and $800,000 in Surface Water Quality Initiative funds to remediate the site, which is near the Clinton River.

A future second phase of the project calls for nearby housing and retail.
