Vandy baseball families rally around RV – The Tennessean
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Home base for Vanderbilt baseball families this season has been on six wheels, and it traveled to the Super Regional over the weekend.
Jerry and Cheri Snider, parents of Commodores freshman pitcher Collin Snider, purchased an RV a year ago to follow their son on SEC road trips. But once they started parking it along Natchez Trace for home games and making regular treks to away games, it became the unofficial spot for Vanderbilt families to gather.
Long before this weekend, Jerry even reserved an RV parking spot a few miles from Omaha, the site of the College World Series.
“Well, I called over there, and they had spots for $40 a night, just right across the river from Omaha,” Jerry said. “So I said, ‘Heck yeah, we’ll take one.’ We’re prepared for Omaha.
“… But our RV has kind of become a rallying point for the families of the players. We eat, talk and just have some fun before we go into games. We’ve gotten to do that here (at the Super Regional).”
The Sniders hosted about 40 family members of players during pregame of the Super Regionals outside Illinois Field. And after Sunday’s game was postponed due to the threat of inclement weather, Vanderbilt fans and even a few friendly Illinois followers congregated around the RV to talk about their changing plans.
Overnight, the RV has housed the Snider family and guest Sabina Vargas, the girlfriend of pitcher Carson Fulmer.
In Saturday’s opener, Fulmer picked up the win, and Snider, a former Riverdale High standout, relieved him in the seventh inning to help finish off the 13-0 victory.
The Sniders first met Vargas, from Fulmer’s home in Lakeland, Fla., when she attended a very frigid home game in February when Carson was pitching. The Sniders offered her a sleeping bag to stay warm in the stands at Hawkins Field, and their relationship grew from there as Carson and Collin became friends.
“And so she knew we had the RV and she wanted to go with us (to the Super Regional),” said Jerry, who grew up in Illinois. “So I was like, ‘Heck, yeah, the more the merrier.’ So we’ve got a good group up here to see our team.”
Turf plate: Like Vanderbilt’s Hawkins Field, the home surface for the Illini is completely covered by turf, except the dirt-covered mound. The red clay base paths and batter’s box are painted turf.
However, Illinois Field takes the turf one step further. It has a turf home plate. Just like the baselines, it is simply painted white onto the turf.
Kendall contingent: Vanderbilt outfielder Jeren Kendall’s family trekked to the Super Regional, which cut the drive from their Wisconsin home in half compared to a trip to Nashville.
At least nine of Kendall’s family, including his mother, father, girlfriend, grandparents and more, came to the Super Regional.
