Former UNCW pitcher Evan Phillips among a handful of familiar faces to help at the Diamond Trainer Baseball Clinics on Jan. 7-8 at Dixon High School

For the second consecutive year, former East Carolina baseball coach Billy Godwin will direct the Diamond Trainer Baseball Clinics. He will be joined by former and current professional athletes for the pitching/catching clinic on Saturday, Jan. 7, and the hitting clinic on Sunday, Jan. 8. Both will be held at Dixon High School.

The purpose of Diamond Trainer Baseball Clinics is to teach proper fundamentals that lead to individual development as a baseball player. Each clinic is designed around four principals: promote correct fundamentals with hands-on instruction, promote individual development, provide age-appropriate instruction from professional staff, and promote integrity and confidence.

Former UNCW pitcher Evan Phillips, who finished last season with the Double-A Mississippi Braves, will be one of the guest instructors for the pitching/catching clinic. Former Whiteville and ECU standout and current Baltimore Orioles pitcher Mike Wright will also be in attendance.

Laney graduate Stephen Batts, who played at ECU and professionally in the Philadelphia Phillies farm system, will be among the instructors for the hitting clinic. Oakland A’s scout Neil Avent and Atlanta Braves scout Billy Best will also be on hand.

GOLF

For the 41st year, the Carolinas Golf Association will hold its annual seminar series on the USGA Rules of Golf. One of the 14 seminars will take place at Sea Trail Golf Resort in Calabash from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Feb. 28.

Attendees will view a presentation on the basic rules followed by question and answer sessions. Seminars typically last no more than two hours. A 2016-17 edition of the book will be distributed to all participants, and information on the Carolinas Golf Association will be available.
