2015 NASCAR at Michigan race day weather forecast: How wet will it really be? – SB Nation

Rain is likely during the day Sunday at Michigan International Speedway and, yes, even during the Sprint Cup race scheduled during the afternoon. It’s not a matter of IF it will rain but WHEN it will rain. We will see widely scattered areas of rain and storms as we go through the entire day. Along with the rain will come breaks and possible windows.

WILL NASCAR RACE SUNDAY? The weather forecast for Sunday is definitely not ideal with rain showers and thunderstorms likely in the morning and again in the afternoon. Hardest part about this forecast is while we know rain showers and storms are likely, we just don’t know exactly when they will hit and for how long. I’ve seen similar weather forecasts or worse and have also seen NASCAR be able to get an official, or even a complete, race in. My odds for racing Sunday have are between 45 and 55 percent. If there is a long enough window, NASCAR could race and possibly get halfway finished. From there, consider any laps beyond that bonus.

SHOULD I GO TO THE RACE SUNDAY? I can’t, nor will I, tell someone what they should do. If I paid money to go to a race, and as a meteorologist, saw the smallest glimmer of a window, I’d probably take the risk and go, but that’s me. I recommend that if you are trying to decide whether or not to go, don’t just use my weather forecast but look at as many reliable weather sources as you can.

WHAT DOES MONDAY’S FORECAST LOOK LIKE? The weather forecast for Monday is not much better. Looks like the same weather set up as Sunday, which means possible showers and storms. Most of which are widely scattered around southern Michigan. I think NASCAR can race Sunday but the weather isn’t much improved for Monday.
