Highlights
USA takes first medal: Virginia Thrasher took home the first gold medal of the Rio Olympics by winning the 10m air rifle. Thrasher is just 19 years old.
Record-setters: Two world records were broken in the pool — Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu smashed the previous record in the 400m individual medley, while the Australian women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team also set a new mark. Her husband is also quite supportive.
One Williams sister left: Venus Williams was upset by Belgian Kirsten Flipkens, so Serena is the only Williams left in the singles tournament. Venus can still win doubles with her sister — they begin play together on Sunday.
Business as usual: The U.S. basketball team easily defeated China in their opening game, 119-62. Kevin Durant led the team with 25 points.
Marching toward gold: The U.S. women’s soccer team defeated a tough France team, 1-0, as Carli Lloys scored the game’s lone goal.
