NASCAR fans get excited over just about anything related to the Earnhardt family, and with a quick Wikipedia edit, someone on the internet toyed with their emotions.
Fans recently flew into a frenzy on Reddit’s NASCAR page when they noticed British filmmaker Asif Kapadia’s Wikipedia page included a film simply titled Earnhardt with a release date to be announced.
Kapadia is the award-winning director behind the Amy Winehouse documentary, Amy, and Senna, a documentary about the life and death of Brazilian Formula 1 champion Ayrton Senna. So naturally, fans were pumped to see a film about Dale Earnhardt Sr. was in the works.
But skepticism quickly set in.
And then Kapadia himself chimed in to dissolve the internet rumors.
His Wikipedia page appears to have been changed back to exclude any mention of the Earnhardt name. According to The Guardian, Kapadia “is currently working on a film about another troubled genius, Diego Maradona.”
Sorry, NASCAR fans. An Earnhardt documentary from Kapadia just isn’t happening. Don’t believe everything you read on Wikipedia.
