British Cycling warned about issues with dual Team Sky roles in 2011 – Telegraph.co.uk
A “lack of clarity surrounding dual roles” between British Cycling and Team Sky, “resentment amongst some riders and BC staff who did not have Team Sky roles/contracts”, and perhaps most pertinently, the “serious reputational risk to many stakeholders posed by a doping scandal at Team Sky” were all flagged up by the 2011 Deloitte report jointly commissioned by British Cycling and UK Sport to look into the relationship between British Cycling, Team Sky and Sky.
The report, which was submitted by British Cycling as part of the documentary evidence it supplied to the Culture Media and Sport Select Committee this week in response to requests for evidence made by MPs during last week’s hearing, and a copy of which has been seen by Telegraph Sport, shows British Cycling was well aware of the potential for exactly the sort of trouble it now finds itself in. It is at the centre of a UK Anti-Doping investigation into a medical package flown out to Sir Bradley Wiggins at the 2011 Criterium du Dauphiné and assailed from all sides by criticism of its governance, communications and blurred relationship with Team Sky.
Team Sky claim that a harmless decongestant, Fluimucil, was in the package, but UKAD has been unable to verify that claim. Damian Collins MP, the chair of the CMS select committee, told Radio 4’s Today programme that a paper trail clarifying what was in the package and why it was ordered “clearly doesn’t exist”.
