Bubble Soccer Comes to West Des Moines – whotv.com

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa- On Friday morning Iowa was introduced to something called Bubble Soccer. The concept takes a little explaining, but once understood can lead to some fun.

Players are inside of a giant air inflated bubble.  They enter the bubble and wear it kind of like a back pack.

Players can be knocked flying with out much risk of being injured.

“In theory the goal is to play soccer to score goals, but in reality, the fun is just running into each other, knocking your friends over, “ said Dave Callison of the Iowa Regular Baptist Camp. “We’ve had this a year, and so far we’ve had no injuries, and that’s pretty remarkable considering all the activities we’ve done.”

The Bubble Soccer gear was brought to West Des Moines for WHO Radio’s “Van and Bonnie” morning show.

“I just happened to see a video of it on YouTube, and I burst out laughing,” said Bonnie Lucas of WHO Radio. “I said, ‘this has got Van and Bonnie written all over it.'”

Lucas said she would not be able to try the Bubble Soccer due to a diagnosis of a bad knee.

“It’s partially soccer, but it’s also partially just knocking everybody down,” said Katie Crowley, of the West Des Moines Valley Swim Team.  Her team mates came out to play each other in Bubble Soccer.

It’s a little confusing, your not sure exactly which way you’re facing, or what’s up and down,” said Matt Millage, an ISU student, who works summers at the Regular Baptist Camp.

Knees and legs are not protected by the bubble.  The game is played like any soccer game, players try to put the ball in the goal.  But bigger goal would be to either knock another team’s player flying, or keep from getting knocked over.
