NASCAR’s most popular driver is at a crossroads in the 2015 season.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. needs to win either this weekend’s Hollywood Casino 400 in Kansas or the CampingWorld.com 500 at Talladega on Oct. 25.
Earnhardt currently sits 11th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase standings; he’s 19 points behind Brad Keselowski on the cutoff line.
These next two races are the final ones of the Contender Round in the Chase format; with a win, he could advance into the Eliminator 8 Round.
It’s a good thing, then, that Earnhardt loves to race at Talladega–and has had good luck there over the years.
He own six wins at Talladega and is tied with Jeff Gordon for the second-most victories in track history. He won last May’s GEICO 500 at Talladega.
“You’d like to go in and get a win as soon as you can in this format, and get yourself locked in to take the pressure off,” Earnhardt said in an interview with NASCAR.com this week. “Our guys have been bringing some great cars to the racetrack. We’ve run good at these next few tracks that we’re going to. I’m just going to take it one corner at a time and try to do the best I can on the track, and hopefully we have smooth stops and don’t have any issues with the car.”
