MILWAUKEE — Time after time Saturday afternoon, the Evergreens had potential scoring chances ended by a swarming Kettle Moraine defense that clogged up the middle of the field.

Then in the 104th minute, Kendra Wolfgram hit Jordyn Ostrowski with a through ball and the D.C. Everest senior broke in on the Lasers’ net and converted on the opportunity.

It was Ostrowski’s only shot of the game but it gave the Evergreens a 1-0 win in the WIAA Division 1 state girls soccer championship game at Uihlein Soccer Park.

“(The ball) got away from me a little bit and I got a little scared because I didn’t think I was going to get control of it again,” said Ostrowski, who shot the ball into the upper right corner for her 20th goal of the season. “I just tried to get it back under control again and find where the goalie was in a brief second and tried to find the back of the net.”

Steph Meuret made four saves as the Evergreens won the title after falling in the championship game in their first state tournament appearance last year.

Everest (27-1-2) ended the year with a 21-game winning streak. The top-ranked Evergreens also became the first girls soccer team from the central Wisconsin area to win a WIAA Division 1 title. Assumption captured a Division 4 championship last year.

“It’s amazing,” Ostrowski said. “Our team has worked so hard together. Words can’t describe how much joy and happiness I have and my whole team has in bringing the gold ball back.”

Meuret made a big save two minutes into the second half as Moraine’s Chase Rehm broke in on her. But the Evergreens had the next five attempts and held Moraine without a shot for nearly 30 minutes.

The Evergreens outshot Moraine 10-5 in the second half and overtime combined, and had an apparent goal by Maddie Mittelsteadt in the 73rd minute waved off by an offsides call.

Everest switched to a 4-3-3 formation with two outside forwards shortly in the second half.

“They were outpossessing us and were getting the balls to their outside backs. We were chasing them all over the field,” Everest coach Lucas Kollross said. “Once we changed formations, I thought we got a little more momentum.”

The Evergreens had the only shot in the first 10-minute overtime period and then converted roughly midway through the second.

“I told the girls, ‘Just keep going.’ I know they were a little worried about potentially going to penalty kicks, but I felt really good about out chances of scoring,” Kollross said. “We put a lot of pressure on them in the first overtime and we just had to keep going. Jordyn just made a clutch shot and it was a wonderful team effort.”

Twice in the first half a Kettle Moraine shot hit the post.

The first came just over midway through the half, as Meuret was able to get a hand on a high shot by Olivia Hively that then hit the crossbar.

The second near-miss came in the 38th minute, as a shot by Julie Zach from inside the Everest goal box hit the near post.

The Evergreens were able to then clear the ball out of trouble. The Lasers held a 4-1 shot advantage in the half, with Kayla Huber getting the only solid scoring opportunity for the Evergreens.

“It in the first half it got a little bit frustrating, but at halftime (Kollross) settled us down,” Ostrowski said. “He talked us through it and said, ‘It’s our game, we want it more.’ He just talked us through it and calmed our nerves.”
