Gold Medals ends Cup curse – Racing.com

Gold Medals broke through for his first country cup win as he took out the $50,000 Sungold Milk Terang Cup (2150m) on Sunday.

The Symon Wilde-trained seven-year-old was having his 13th start in a Cup of any description, and it proved the lucky charm as Linda Meech rode her third Terang Cup winner in nine years, having also won aboard Titch in 2013, and Macau Causeway in 2008.

The Casterton (x2), Warracknabeal (x2), Stawell (x2), Terang (x2), Edenhope and Apsley Cups had all previously evaded Gold Medals, as well as cracks at each of the Listed Torney and Warrnambool Cups.

But with star jockey Meech in the saddle for the first time, Gold Medals proved too strong at Terang, where the son of Elvstroem had finished second (2016) and fifth (2015) in previous editions of the Cup.

The result was Gold Medals’ first win on the flat since January 2015 when a victor at Moonee Valley, with the horse banking three hurdle wins last season – including in the $100,000 Lafferty Hurdle at Warrnambool.

The Cup win was Meech’s 98th winner of the Australian racing season.
