Hiller Instinct: Boston 2024 Olympics – Just Say No – WHDH-TV

BOSTON (WHDH) -
We’ve seen the evidence.

We don’t need more time.

When it comes to the Boston Olympics, I say we should just say “no.”

Today, another stake in the heart of the Boston 2024, with the governor predicting the Boston Olympics will be morphing into the Massachusetts Olympics, with venues statewide.

Is that great thinking, or desperation?

Do we think Paris will respond by staging a French Olympics?  Or Berlin will go German?

We’re only kidding ourselves.

The time has come to forget all those pretty pictures of what a Boston Olympics might look like, because all its looked like so far is an expensive mess.

Are taxpayers on the hook?  Who knows?  First, public money was involved, then it wasn’t, then it was again, and now it’s not supposed to be, except for infrastructure?

And are you telling me the payoff for taxpayers will be some new sidewalks and bridges?

Sounds like slim pickings, especially compared to the bonanza the Olympics could be for the well-connected–who apparently think the Olympic rings could be zeros at the end of checks they’ll be getting.

The new face of the Boston games is Steve Pagliuca, one of the owners of the Boston Celtics, who’s expected to be joined by Larry Lucchino, a top executive of the Boston Red Sox.

So now the Olympics are like an All-Star Team.

And here’s what that makes me think:

“Ask not what (the Olympics) can do for you, ask what you can do for (the Olympics.)”

And here’s one more reason we don’t need the Olympics:

Have you noticed that none of the talk about the games involves the athletes, or the records they may set?

And isn’t that what the Olympics are supposed to be about?
