Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Bezos have finalized their divorce agreement, and he’s getting 75% of the Amazon shares and voting control of the rest – Business Insider
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Bezos have finalized their divorce agreement.
They each released statements on Twitter on Thursday saying they had “finished the process of dissolving” their marriage and would be co-parenting their four kids.
In her statement, MacKenzie Bezos said she was granting Jeff Bezos all her interests in The Washington Post and Blue Origin, as well as 75% of the Amazon stock they owned and voting control over the shares she’s retaining.
Her remaining stake in Amazon is estimated to be worth about $35.7 billion at current prices, which would make her the third-richest woman in the world, according to Forbes’ list.
MacKenzie Bezos posted this statement on Twitter:
“Grateful to have finished the process of dissolving my marriage with Jeff with support from each other and everyone who reached out to us in kindness, and looking forward to next phase as co-parents and friends. Happy to be giving him all of my interests in the Washington Post and Blue Origin, and 75% of our Amazon stock plus voting control of my shares to support his continued contributions with the teams of these incredible companies. Excited about my own plans. Grateful for the past as I look forward to what comes next.”
Jeff Bezos released his own statement, thanking MacKenzie Bezos “for her kindness in this process”:
“I’m so grateful to all my friends and family for reaching out with encouragement and love. It means more than you know. MacKenzie most of all. I’m grateful for her support and for her kindness in this process and am very much looking forward to our new relationship as friends and co-parents.
“In all our work together, MacKenzie’s abilities have been on full display. She has been an extraordinary partner, ally, and mother. She is resourceful and brilliant and loving, and as our futures unroll, I know I’ll always be learning from her.”
Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos announced in January that they were divorcing after 25 years of marriage. Soon after, the National Enquirer reported that the Amazon CEO was having an extramarital affair with Lauren Sanchez, a former TV anchor, saying it had obtained “raunchy messages and erotic selfies” the two exchanged.
Jeff Bezos then launched an investigation into who leaked the personal messages, and he published an explosive blog post accusing American Media Inc., the publisher of the National Enquirer, of “extortion and blackmail.” Bezos said AMI had threatened to release the photos unless he agreed to stop investigating the leaks and made a public statement denying its coverage was politically motivated. He refused.
Federal prosecutors are reportedly reviewing Bezos’ allegations of extortion.
Bezos also hinted in his post that there were ties between the National Enquirer’s investigation into his personal life and the Saudi government.
In an op-ed article published in The Daily Beast last week, Bezos’ personal investigator, Gavin de Becker, said his team had concluded that Saudi Arabia “had access to Bezos’ phone and gained private information.” He didn’t specify how the Saudis could have gained access to the phone, but the country has previously been accused of using spyware on its adversaries.
