Middletown Program Named Top Cycling Club in Nation – Hartford Courant
A quickly growing youth cycling program in Middletown has been named the top cycling club in the country for 2016 by USA Cycling, the official organization for competitive cycling in the U.S.
The Connecticut Cycling Advancement Program’s youth programs and teams have brought an increase of young riders to a sport traditionally dominated by adults. The organization, founded in 2013, has started 36 programs for 490 registered youth riders throughout the state, said CCAP Executive Director David Hoyle. Hoyle began racing when he was 19.
CCAP also offers programs in mountain biking and cyclocross. All of CCAP’s programs are run through middle school and high school clubs or town programs for kids age 9 to 18. Every team has one to three coaches, Hoyle said.
“Cycling is a lifelong sport so it’s the perfect sport for kids to get into because they get introduced when they’re young … and can do it when they’re 60 or 70 years old,” he said.
It’s also accessible, Hoyle said.
“Every kid has a road in front of their house or woods in their backyard to ride, and we’re lucky that Connecticut as a state is one of the most beautiful places to ride,” Hoyle said.
Three clubs won the title for overall club of the year — though CCAP won the Division I title, the division for the largest cycling clubs recognized by USA Cycling. USA Cycling awards the winners a trophy and complimentary renewal fees for the next year.
