Almost two dozen people at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia were hurt after a driver ran right into the crowd after a NASCAR race Sunday.

Police said they took the unnamed driver into custody for questioning, Fox 8 reported.

The crash unfolded about 30 minutes after the race when the driver jumped a traffic line, according to MotorSport.com. Many of the injured reportedly were fans waiting for racers to leave the speedway after the race.

A track spokesman said 22 pedestrians were injured and nine people were taken to nearby hospitals. Investigators said all of the injured were expected to survive.

Jimmie Johnson won the race, earning him a spot in the title-deciding Nov. 20 race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Most of the injured received treatment at the scene, but seven were taken to Martinsville’s Memorial Hospital and two others transported to Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden. “We will monitor the situation closely with local authorities, and work with them to provide updates,” Martinsville Speedway told Fox 8.

Martinsville, near the North Carolina border, is some 50 miles northeast of Winston-Salem.
