The veteran NASCAR driver and Fox Sports analyst said before the Daytona 500 this season that NASCAR’s cars are too loud, calling the iconic roar “obnoxious” and really getting on his nerves. So is a solution to Waltrip’s grievance coming in the near future?
According to the Sports Business Journal, NASCAR is considering making cars quieter to make it easier for fans to communicate easier during the race and engage more socially. Citing several unnamed sources, the report says the governing body has has informed owners and track executives of the proposal.
Making its cars quieter is one of 15-20 proposals NASCAR is researching to make attending races more enjoyable while not alienating traditional fans, a similar challenge facing Major League Baseball.
NASCAR has made plenty of aerodynamics changes to its cars since the beginning of the sport but the unmuffled sound has remained. NASCAR isn’t afraid to change its rules, so we may be seeing a quieter car as soon as next season if the initiative is approved.
