Tonight’s NASCAR truck series race at Las Vegas featured some early, scary fireworks after a head-on crash featuring driver Austin Theriault. The portion of the wall with which Theriault made contact was, according to on-air reports, not protected with a SAFER barrier. Theriault was airlifted to a local hospital by helicopter, according to FS1.

Kyle Busch was seriously injured after a similar collision at the beginning of this NASCAR season. It seems amazing that there are any surfaces at NASCAR-sanctioned speedways that aren’t, by now, fully SAFER’d, but drivers keep finding those spots. We’ll cross our fingers and update when news on Theriault’s condition becomes available.
