Friday night, NASCAR driver Matt Tifft will be flying around the Daytona International Speedway track in his patriotic No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota during the Coca-Cola Firecracker 250, looking for his first XFINITY Series race win. But this time last year, the now-21-year-old was in a very different position.
While being treated for a disc condition in his back, a slow-growing brain tumor — also known as a low-grade glioma, according to a team release — was discovered, and Tifft had it surgically removed.
One year later as he’s back behind the wheel for JGR, Tifft “proudly” showed off his scar with what look like then-and-now photos.
According to his Twitter account, the driver also helped raise more than $135,000 back in April to raise awareness and increase resources for those impacted by brain tumors.
