Three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams have been penalized for infractions last week at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the sanctioning body announced Wednesday afternoon.
Matt McCall, the crew chief for Jamie McMurray’s Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates team, has been placed on NASCAR probation through Dec. 31, after the right rear quarter panel wheel opening on the No. 1 Chevrolet was found to be modified after qualifying inspection for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600.
The probation of McCall is the result of a P2 level penalty on NASCAR’s six-tier penalty system, known as NASCAR’s Deterrence System.
Additionally, two teams — the No. 48 of Jimmie Johnson and No. 51 of Justin Allgaier — have been assessed P1 level penalties for receiving written warnings in two consecutive events, both at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Johnson’s team received a warning for tampering with the No. 48 car’s side skirts during the May 16 Sprint All-Star Race, and received a second warning for issues in pre-qualifying inspection for the Coca-Cola 600.
In addition to a warning from the All-Star event, the No. 51 team received one for issues in Coca-Cola 600 pre-race inspection.
As a result of their infractions, the No. 48 and No. 51 teams will receive the last two choices in the pit selection process, respective to qualifying results, for this weekend’s FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks at Dover International Speedway.
