Trevor Bayne and Jennifer Jo Cobb were both fined and placed on probation Wednesday after each walked across a hot track during races last weekend at Dover International Speedway.

Cobb walked angrily up the racetrack toward Tyler Reddick after she believed he spun her out during Friday’s Camping World Truck Series race. And Bayne got out of his car and left the scene before safety workers arrived during Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race.

Bayne was fined $20,000 and Cobb was fined $5,000. The difference in fines was because NASCAR uses smaller dollar amounts for its lower series.

The penalties were the first given under a rule implemented last August following the death of Kevin Ward Jr. in a sprint car race. NASCAR’s Tony Stewart, moonlighting in a dirt race, struck and killed Ward as he angrily walked down the track toward Stewart’s car.

NASCAR then made a rule that drivers should not get out of their car until safety workers arrived, with the exception being if they thought the car would catch fire.

Harvick team penalized

In addition, Kevin Harvick will have the last pit stall choice in this weekend’s race at Pocono Raceway after his team received consecutive written warnings.

At the Coca-Cola 600, the team was warned for having to go through pre-race inspection more than three times; at Dover, an exhaust pipe was found to be outside rule book specifications.

Lower series penalties

Peyton Sellers’ crew chief and car chief were suspended one race and the team docked 15 points after a piece of unsecured weight came out of the car and hit another during practice.

This was the second such incident in three weeks in the Xfinity Series.

In addition to the suspension, crew chief John Monsam was also fined $15,000.

Also, Ty Dillon crew chief Nick Harrison was fined $7,500 and the team docked 10 points after the No. 33 car failed post-race inspection (too low in the rear) following the Xfinity race.
