Patterson Mill, Bel Air claim region field hockey titles – Baltimore Sun
Three Harford County field hockey teams played for region titles Wednesday and two, Bel Air and Patterson Mill, both won, while Fallston fell short.
At Patterson Mill, the Huskies squared off with Perryville for a second straight year in the region final setting. And for the second consecutive time, the Huskies beat the Panthers.
This year, the Huskies overcame an early deficit en route to a 3-1 Class 1A North region championship.
Patterson Mill will battle East region champ Queen Anne’s in a state semifinal Monday at Broadneck High School. The game time is either 5 or 7 p.m.
Perryville senior Claire Hudson put the Panthers on top just 1:23 into the game with an unassisted goal.
The Panthers (5-10) just missed on increasing the lead in the next few minutes, but the lead stayed at 1-0 thanks to some solid Panthers defense.
With 15:17 left, however, Patterson Mill drew even on Sarah McCollum’s first of two goals. Julia Frankis assisted.
“I didn’t even know it went in, but when I heard it went in I was extremely happy because I haven’t scored that many goals this season and now I got two and now we’re regional champions,” McCollum said.
McCollum added her second goal just about nine minutes later on one the Huskies 11 penalty corner opportunities. Maggie Egan inserted the ball that got to the stick of captain Juls Gabor, whose waist-high shot was blocked by Panthers goalie Madalynn Wilkinson. McCollum was there for the rebound and lifted it right back into the goal. The Panthers had no corners.
The Huskies (8-9) scored twice more in the half with Cass Ward adding both goals, but both were waived off because of infractions in the process of the ball entering the goal.
Gabor also had a near miss, hitting a blistering shot that found the left post with less than a minute to play in the first half.
It appeared Perryville was going to tie the game at 2 early in the second half. Krissy McDuff dribbled into the shooting area and Huskies goalie Grace Baltimore charged toward her. The ball bounced over the sliding goalie and toward the goal. Egan, though, raced back and cleared the ball away before it could reach the goal.
The Huskies then put the dagger in with the final goal with 5:32 to play. Jasmine Sabol hit a one-hopper past Wilkinson after possessing a ball perfectly lobbed in from freshman Lilly Felts.
“We have a young team this year and we definitely started out a little nervous and they [Perryville] were able to get it down and capitalize on an opportunity they had early and it threw us off a little but, so it was hard to get the nerves worked out,” Huskies head coach Shannon Swinscoe said. “I knew we had the ability to come back but it’s always tough in this sport because you can control a whole game and not score and we’ve done that before, so there’s always that nervousness from the sideline that we might not get it in the goal, but we started passing the ball around nicely and playing our game and then I was confident we were gonna do it.”
Panthers goalie Wilkinson finished with five saves, while Huskies keeper Baltimore had four saves.
Bobcats back in state tourney
Defending Class 3A state champion Bel Air (8-7) took another step back to defend, beating host Towson, 1-0, for the 3A North crown.
Peyton Hale scored the game’s only goal on what coach Emma Gryglewski described as a “beautiful goal.”
The Bobcats defense has played shutout hockey throughout the region tourney. Goalie Chelsea Gostomski has a combined 17 saves in the three region wins.
Bel Air will meet Chesapeake-Anne Arundel in state semifinal play Wednesday at Broadneck High School. Game time is 5 or 7 p.m.
Cougars knocked out
Fallston’s bid for the 2A North title was derailed at Hereford, where the Cougars (11-5) were beaten, 4-1.
Hereford had a 1-0 lead at the half and extended it to 3-0 before the Cougars got on the board.
Fallston’s goal was scored by Kylie Ryan with assist from Caroline Graf with 8:28 left in the game. The Bulls final goal, a stroke goal, came with 5:17 to play.
Cougars goalie Lindsay Nichols had five saves.
