Lindsay Stone broke a 21-year-old record at the Section V Class A Swimming Championships, earning automatic All-American honors to help Pittsford bring home its 15th straight sectional title.

Stone’s time in the 500 freestyle was 4 minutes, 46.80 seconds.

The Panthers, as they have during their extended title run, cruised to the championship with 679 points, 300 more than runner-up Fairport. To further put Pittsford’s dominance in perspective, the only other team to score more than 300 points was the Red Raiders.

“People ask me all the time what makes Pittsford different from everyone else, why are (we) on the top so many years in a row,” said Stone, who is verbally committed to swim at Notre Dame. “All I know is what we do. I don’t know what other teams do. I know the work we put in.”

And the work they put in is year-round.

“Basically we have a system, we have a club that feeds us (talent), the (YMCA) team feeds us and most of my kids swim year-round,” Pittsford coach Marty Keating said. “They just work hard.”

In addition to her state record, Stone also won the individual title in the 200 free (1:49.43) and was a part of the 400 free relay that finished eight seconds ahead of runner-up Fairport.

Pittsford had a swimmer or relay team claim first place in all but two events in the meet.

Keating was particularly impressed with freshman swimmer Sadie Wallis, who captured first in the 100 breast stroke in 1:06.78, 10 seconds better than her best time at the beginning of the season.

Penfield coach Jason Weber was voted coach of the year.

In 2014, Keating spent $16,000 on coaching camps and clinics across the country, and clearly they have paid off.

From that experience, Keating mentors his team in terms of different units: distance, individual medley swimmers, breast stroke, backstroke and sprinters.

“It’s not one-size-fits all,” said Keating explaining his practices. “It’s four different practices going on at one time.”

Overall, there will be 53 swimmers or relay teams representing Section V at the New York State Girls Swimming Championships at Ithaca College from Thursday, Nov. 17, through Saturday, Nov. 19.
