Rio Olympics: Here is a list of all the golfers who will not compete this summer – CBSSports.com
To this point, only nine golfers have withdrawn from the 2016 Olympics even though it feels like a lot more than that. Rory McIlroy is pretty clearly the biggest name, but he’s not the only big-time player not going. Here are the nine who have cited all manner of things from the Zika virus to a compressed PGA Tour schedule for why they will not be up for consideration this summer when golf hits the Olympics for the first time in over a century.
Ranked by Official World Golf Ranking.
- Rory McIlroy (No. 3) — Northern Ireland
- Adam Scott (No. 8) — Australia
- Louis Oosthuizen (No. 14) — South Africa
- Charl Schwartzel (No. 23) — South Africa
- Marc Leishman (No. 37) — Australia
- Graeme McDowell (No. 73) — Northern Ireland
- Miguel Angel Jimenez (No. 166) — Spain
- Vijay Singh (No. 210) — Fiji
- Tim Wilkinson (No. 340) — New Zealand
The real dominoes have not fallen yet even though there are some superstars hedging pretty hard against going. Still, this is not a list the IOC wants to see in the first year it admits golf back into the Olympics since the turn of last century.
The future of the sport in the Olympics could survive if this is the end of the list (although I don’t think it will), but it’s doubtful this will be the end of the list. If you look at language from other global stars slated to make it to this year’s Olympic Games, it would appear we are a long way from the end of the line.
And that means we might get one of the more forgettable global golf tournaments in years.
