Soccer brawl erupts in Newark before New York Derby, report says – NJ.com

NEWARK — Kicks, punches and a sandwich board were thrown amid a violent brawl Sunday afternoon in Newark, apparently related to the upcoming New York Derby soccer match between the New York Red Bulls and New York City FC.

Associated Press reporter Rob Harris captured video of the scene, shot outside Bello’s Pub and Grill, near Newark Penn Station. The video shows groups of men chanting “Who are you?” while punching, pushing and kicking each other and hurling objects, including bags of trash.

Harris reported that the brawl participants appeared to be supporters of rival soccer clubs. The match between the New York Red Bulls and New York City FC was set to kick off at 7 p.m. Sunday at Red Bull Arena in Harrison.

A spokesman for the Newark Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The video shows an NJ Transit police cruiser approaching the scene.
