A hotheaded New Jersey soccer coach allegedly head-butted an opposing coach and backhanding the man’s 9-year-old son in a post-match brawl, police said Monday.
Sean Cormack, who coaches boys soccer in Fair Lawn, went berserk around 4:17 p.m. Sept. 10 following a soccer game at Berdan Grove Park, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.
Cormack was yelling at players from Midland Park, the opposing team, when the squad’s 52-year-old coach intervened.
“It had been a bit of a rough soccer match and the Fair Lawn coach began speaking to the Midland Park players,” Metzler explained. “The Midland Park coach stepped in between and said, ‘Look, if you have a problem with what went on in the game, speak to me, not the kids.’ That’s how this all came about.”
The argument turned physical when Cormack allegedly head-butted the other coach — and whacked the man’s young son as the boy and others tried breaking up the fight, Metzler said.
Cormack, 45, was booked on two counts of simple assault and could face up to 18 months behind bars. He was charged and released.
He suffered a cut on his head and was transported to Valley Hospital.
The boy was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with dizziness, redness and swelling, while his father refused medical attention at the scene.
It’s unclear whether the game was part of a recreation or school league.
Cormack couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
