It’s going to be a huge day in NASCAR today.
Las Vegas Motor Speedway has scheduled a press conference at 5:30 p.m. ET at which time it’s expected to announce that the track will get a second race in 2018, one that would fall in the 10-race season-ending Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.
Still to be determined is which track would lose a race so Las Vegas could gain one.
Also at 5:30 p.m. ET, the NASCAR Hall of Fame will announce who the 20 nominees for the 2018 Hall class will be. Five of those 20 will be voted into the 2018 class later this year, with the formal induction ceremony taking place next January.
Last but not least, NASCAR is expected to hand down penalties from last weekend’s races in Atlanta, and they are likely to be substantial.
In the Cup race at Atlanta, AJ Allmendinger’s No. 47 JTG Daugherty Racing Chevrolet had three loose lug nuts in post-race inspection. Per the NASCAR rule book, the penalty for that infraction is a loss of 35 points and for crew chief Randall Burnett, a three-race suspension and $65,000 fine.
Also, Kyle Busch’s race-winning XFINITY Series car failed post-race height inspection and that team could be looking at an encumbered win, which means that Busch would still get the victory in the record books but Joe Gibbs Racing would not get any owner points.
FOXSports.com will have more on all of these developing stories today.
