U.S., Canada advance to World Women’s Hockey Championship final – NBCSports.com
The U.S. women’s hockey team will play Canada in the World Championship final Saturday, for the 16th time in 16 editions of the competition dating to 1990.
The U.S. trounced Russia 13-1 in its semifinal in Malmo, Sweden, on Friday. The Americans outscored four opponents by a combined 30-6 en route to the final, including a 4-2 win over Canada in its group-stage opener last Saturday.
The U.S. roster at Worlds includes 13 members of the Sochi Olympic silver medal-winning team. The biggest names are forwards Hilary Knight and captain Meghan Duggan and goalie Jessie Vetter. It is coached by former NHL defenseman Ken Klee.
Knight and Brianna Decker lead the tournament with 10 points each in four games.
The U.S. beat Canada for the 2013 World Championship in Ottawa, but the Canadians won the last four Olympic titles.
Canada advanced to the final with a 3-0 win over Finland in a later semifinal Friday.
The Canadians are without stalwart defenseman Hayley Wickenheiser, who has played in all five Olympic women’s hockey tournaments but is sidelined by a foot injury. Missing, too, is star goalie Shannon Szabados, who is playing men’s minor-league hockey with the Columbus (Ga.) Cottonmouths.
The final is at 10 a.m. ET.
