US Women’s Soccer Team Making New History Following World Cup Title – ABC News

The United States Women’s Soccer Team is being honored today with a historic ticker-tape parade in New York City following the team’s World Cup triumph.

This marks the first time a women’s sports team is receiving a ride down the city’s famed Canyon of Heroes.

The parade follows the team’s 5-2 victory Sunday against Japan, securing the United States’ third World Cup title. A rally was also hosted Tuesday for the team in Los Angeles, and the team has been invited to the White House.

The team will travel through Manhattan aboard floats, heading up Broadway from Battery Park to City Hall, where Mayor Bill de Blasio will address the team and the crowd.

The parade – which is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. – could draw hundreds of thousands of fans. The cost is estimated at $2 million.

New York City has hosted more than 200 such parades since 1886, honoring famed politicians and Olympians, as well as adventurers such as Amelia Earhart and the Apollo 11 astronauts – but never before a women’s sports team.

While none of the players hails from the city, four members of the team, including midfielder Carli Lloyd, grew up in nearby New Jersey.
