USA men’s soccer won’t be at the Olympics after losing to Colombia – CBSSports.com

The U.S. men’s soccer team will not be joining the U.S. women in Rio. On Tuesday, the U.S. Under-23 men’s squad fell to Colombia 2-1 in Frisco, Texas, losing the Olympic playoff 3-2 on aggregate.

The teams are made of U-23 players because men’s soccer at the Olympics consists of mainly U-23 members and three allowed over-age players.

After having secured a 1-1 draw in Colombia last week, a 0-0 draw on Tuesday would have seen the United States go through, but a poor defensive performance doomed the squad, allowing the Cafateros to advance to this summer’s Olympic games as the Americans were shown two red cards.

Racing Club striker Roger Martinez scored both of the goals for Colombia, with the United States registering little in attack, finding the net on an own goal. Martinez’s second-half strike all but ended the Olympic dream as the United States needed two more goals to advance but could produce very little in the attacking third.

The U.S. men haven’t played in the Summer Olympics since 1988. The U.S. women will be playing in Rio this summer after qualifying in February.
