This afternoon USA Swimming officially announced the 2016-17 USA Swimming National Team. The 106 member team is made up of swimmers finishing in the top six of each Olympic event.
A fifth of this group includes National Team rookies. The Open Water National Team has twelve members.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – With 37 medalists from the 2016 Olympic Games headlining the roster, USA Swimming today announced the 106 members of the 2016-17 National Team.

“Qualifying for the USA Swimming National Team in an Olympic year is an impressive accomplishment, as every swimmer in the country is aiming to perform at their best at the Olympic Trials and beyond. This team represents the best of the best in the United States,” said Frank Busch, USA Swimming National Team Director. “There is a great mix of veterans and talented newcomers on the 2016-17 National Team, and we look forward to building on the record-setting performances in Rio heading into the next Olympic quad.”

The 2016-17 USA Swimming National Team features the top six athletes in each Olympic event from the combined results of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming, 2016 Olympic Games and 2016 U.S. Open.
Among the headliners of the 2016-17 USA Swimming National Team are Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md./Nation’s Capital Swim Club) and Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md./North Baltimore Aquatic Club), who earned National Team status in three events each. Ledecky ranks as the top American in the women’s 200-, 400- and 800-meter freestyle events, while Phelps was tops in the men’s 100m fly, 200m fly and 200m IM.
At the 2016 Olympic Games, Ledecky became the fourth American woman to win four gold medals at a single Olympics and became just the second woman to claim gold in the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle titles at the same Olympic Games.
By again ranking as the most decorated athlete across all sports in Rio with six medals (five gold), Phelps extended his record-setting career totals to 28 total Olympic medals, including 23 gold, across five Olympic Games.
Making up the 12-member Open Water National Team are the 2016 Olympic Games qualifiers, as well as top finishers at the 2016 USA Swimming Open Water National Championships. Leading that group is Haley Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif./Trojan Swim Club) and Jordan Wilimovsky (Malibu, Calif./Team Santa Monica), who both placed fifth in the open water 10K in Rio.
