Everyone knows the rivalry between the Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State Buckeyes on the gridiron, but the bad blood translates to the ice, too. The longtime on-ice combatants played a heated and often bizarre home-and-home series this weekend and things got a little testy.

The two-game set ended in a split with Ohio State winning in a shootout Friday (it’s officially scored as a tie in national standings, though) and Michigan claiming an 8-6 win Sunday.

Things got particularly ugly after the final buzzer sounded in that goal-filled Sunday affair. All of the players left on the ice at the end of regulation found themselves squaring up in a postgame scrum. It was mostly just pushing and shoving.

That appeared to be all it would amount to until Michigan defenseman Cutler Martin and Ohio State forward Brendon Kearney separated from the pack. A linesman tried to split the two, but they weren’t terribly eager to break apart.

Via @thecauldron:

The wrestling match between the two with a linesman unable to break it up took an even uglier turn when Martin delivered a vicious punch to Kearney’s facemask while the linesman was still on top of him. Because of the circumstance, Kearney was unable to adequately defend himself against the punch. The force of the blow also knocked his helmet into the ice.

Here’s another look:

Kearney did manage to get up after the vicious blow.

Martin is probably should expect a suspension by the Big Ten Conference for that one. Not only was it a cheap shot on an opponent, continuing an altercation after a referee or linesman has tried to break it up is generally frowned upon. That’s where Kearney could get in trouble, too, as he took down Martin and the linesman right before the punch.

Martin got a five-minute major for facemasking and a game disqualification on the official box score. Kearney did not receive a penalty, but many other players did. In all, 56 penalty minutes were racked up between the two teams after the final buzzer.

The two rivals are set to have one more series against each other in early March. That should be interesting…
