WATCH: North Dakota hockey player scores one of season’s best goals – CBSSports.com

The last time we brought you a highlight from the University of North Dakota hockey team, it was a great show of teamwork, with the players on the ice completing one of the cleanest passing plays you’ll ever see. This time, though, it’s all about the individual.

That individual, who was also part of that amazing passing play, is senior Drake Caggiula. He also happens to be one of the top undrafted free agents in college hockey this season. What he did Saturday night against the University of Alabama Huntsville shows why NHL teams might be lining up to sign him and it’s also likely to keep him on North Dakota highlight reels for years to come.

With the Fighting Hawks shorthanded, Caggiua collected a clearing attempt along the boards on the left side. He skated into the Chargers’ zone and had one defenseman to beat. There were a number of things he could have done to get his shot away, but the move he ended up making left everyone stunned, including defenseman Cody Champagne and eventually UAH goalie Carmine Guerriero.

Just watch:

The North Dakota senior turned the opposing defenseman into a pretzel, basically, with that move. Then he casually slipped the puck past Guerriero who may have been caught watching that whole play unfold in front of him, though Caggiula’s speed and quick hands would have caught most goaltenders off guard.

The goal gave the Fighting Hawks a 2-1 lead on the way to a 4-1 victory.

Caggiula, who could have multiple NHL offers when his senior season is over, is UND’s leading scorer this year.. Normally, he’d be on a line with first-round NHL draft picks Nick Schmaltz (Chicago Blackhawks) and Brock Boeser (Vancouver Canucks), but both of them are off representing the U.S. at the World Junior Championship. Looks like Caggiula’s doing just fine on his own, though.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound native of Whitby, Ontario now ranks fourth in the nation with 29 points. Remember his name for this spring, NHL fans.
