WATCH: World’s new favorite soccer goalie goes to bar during game and eats on bench – CBS sports.com (blog)

Sutton United’s backup goalkeeper Wayne Shaw has taken in the soccer world by storm. But it’s not because of his ability, it’s because he’s an average guy who happens to be living out a dream, and because of what he does off the pitch.

On Monday, the non-league English side played giants Arsenal in the FA Cup fifth round in a historic match for the club, which the Gunners won 2-0.

The goalkeeper didn’t play, but he made headlines by going to a bar at half time and then eating a meat pie during the game. Fun, right? Now, what’s not so fun for him is what happened after. Per The Guardian, the Football Association and Gambling Commission has launched an investigation. The report says Shaw admitted that he knew a betting company was offering odds of 8-1 against him eating a pie on the bench during the club’s defeat. He has since resigned.

First, here he is at the bar.

And here he is destroying the delicious meat pie at the half.

After the match he said he pulled the stunt off to give fans “a bit of banter.”

“A few of the lads said to me earlier on, ‘What is going on with the 8-1 about eating a pie?’ I said, ‘I don’t know, I’ve eaten nothing all day, so I might give it a go later on,’” he said per The Guardian. “Sun Bets had us at 8-1 to eat a pie. I thought I would give them a bit of banter and let’s do it. All the subs were on and we were 2-0 down.

“I went and got it at half time from the kitchen. I had it all prepared and ready to go. It was meat and potato.”

Now, we will see if he is punished in the end. It seems as if he was joking and just winding people up, having a little fun. But when it comes to soccer and betting, you have to be super careful and what could have been a joke could lead to some problems.

And this actually has resulted in him resigning, but what a way to go out.

On a positive note for him, according to The Independent, a supermarket wants to add him their “pie tasting team” and has made the offer of a year worth of pies.

The newest world star and savage. What a legend.
