WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Betty Jane France was a native of Winston-Salem and married the late William C. France, son of Bill France Sr., who founded NASCAR, according to the Nascar Foundation website.

Her son Brian France is the current chief executive officer and chairman of NASCAR.

Before she passed, Betty France was the executive vice president and assistant treasurer of NASCAR and the chairperson of the NASCAR Foundation.

She’s also the namesake of the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award, which is given out every year and recognizes charitable and volunteer efforts. One of this year’s four national finalists is from Greensboro.

As the word of her death began to pass through Twittersphere Monday night and early Tuesday, several big-name drivers stepped in to show their support of the late executive vice president.

“Our sport lost another great woman today. Betty Jane France will be missed,” Tony Stewart said in a Tweet Monday night.
