For more than 44 years, The Sports Page — which was owned by Hyland, a former New York Giant and Westchester County native, gave locals a place to catch games and enjoy brews. On its last night on April 7, patrons packed into the bar to reminisce and watch baseball.
Before becoming a bar owner, Hyland was a football standout at Archbishop Stepinac High School, a first-round NFL draft pick and a Super Bowl champion.
He opened his first bar, The Single Wing, in 1973 while playing for the New York Giants. Four years later, Hyland opened the first Sports Page on Mamaroneck Avenue. In 2006, The Sports Page moved to the White Plains Mall on Hamilton Avenue.
The mall will eventually be demolished as part of project to develop the area into a 20-plus story tower with apartments, stores and parking. Hyland told The Journal News on his final night tending bar that he has no plans at this time to open a new place.
The sale is scheduled to be held at The Sports Page at 200 Hamilton Ave. in White Plains, starting with the furniture and office equipment at 3 p.m., followed by the auction of the bar’s sports memorabilia starting at 5 p.m. Buyers must bring cash or a bank cashier’s check.
