Boy with cerebral palsy wins sports day race, with some help from his friends – Telegraph.co.uk
Mrs Boyers posted the clip of Daniel’s unexpected triumph saying: “Well this afternoons Sports Day at St Oswald’s primary was amazing, after Daniel telling me he didn’t want to run the flat race, he ended up doing it in amazing style… surrounded by the best mates he could have.
“Truly magical! This is inclusion, but the kind that you can’t teach, this comes from the heart.
“Daniel LOVES the fact that came first! Super happy boy. Not a dry eye in the house!!”
In a subsequent update she wrote: “Just to let you know he was crying at the end and running to me (his mum filming) but it was happiness not upset or pain.”
Mrs Boyers told the Manchester Evening News: “He has always run every year, but always comes last. This year all of the kids decided not to run past Daniel.
“They were so upset he was upset. At the end of the video there was a little boy called James putting his arm out to make sure they didn’t go past him.
“James was worried he would get in trouble for doing it, but I said it is just super, brilliant. Daniel ran straight to me and burst into hysterical tears.”
“He has learning difficulties so he genuinely thinks he ran a great race, he has been so happy ever since.
“The children that ran the race are absolutely brilliant, all of the children in the class, everyone, are supportive of him and make sure he is always included.”
• Earlier this week a group of schoolboys linked arms in a sports day race to allow their friend who has Down’s Syndrome to win the race.
