Authorities in Northern California arrested parents who allegedly put their two toddler boys in cages bolted to a bedroom wall.

Modoc County Sheriff Tex Dowdy said Tuesday that deputies arrested the couple last week after they found the boys while serving a search warrant for illegal firearm possession.

Deputies on Friday found the twin boys, both under 2 years old, in two cribs stacked on top of each other and attached to the wall “like dog crates,” according to the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office. Dowdy said they also found three guns, ammunition and evidence of a butane honey oil lab inside the home in Tulelake, about 30 miles south of Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Deputies arrested 25-year-old Ramon Zendejas and his girlfriend, Mercadies Williams, also 25, on charges of child endangerment and illegal firearms possession. Authorities said suspected methamphetamine was also inside the house.

Dowdy told local station KRCR he believes the parents locked the children to keep them away from the firearms and controlled substances. Deputies had no knowledge of children living in the home before they served the search warrant, Dowdy told KRCR.
