One of the top two-sport athletes in the Midwest for the class of 2019 is Michael Fletcher of Carman-Ainsworth (Flint). The 6-foot-6, 235-pound defensive end already has multiple scholarships in football and basketball, and is primed to receive many more.

As a football prospect, Fletcher has offers from Iowa State, Toledo, Central Michigan and Bowling Green. As a basketball recruit, Northern Illinois and Toledo have extended him a scholarship. His combination of offers in two sports puts him in rare company, especially this early in the process. Fletcher talked about the universities he has visited most recently.

“I have been to two games so far, Michigan and Michigan State,” Fletcher said. “Several other schools have said they said they want my contact info and have expressed interest in me. I like both schools (U-M and MSU) and I have family that went to both. But State is my favorite, I grew up cheering for them.”

Fletcher has been very productive for Carman–Ainsworth since he started playing varsity. Last fall as a sophomore, he posted 7.5 sacks. His goal is to break the school record of 14 before he graduates. However, the most important aspect is doing whatever it takes to help his team win.

Fletcher does not have a scholarship offer from Michigan State, but the staff will be evaluating his junior film. I asked Fletcher about his contact with the staff and what his are strengths as a player.

“I have talked with Coach (Mark) Snyder, Coach (Ron) Burton and Coach (Mark) Dantonio,” he said. “They have said they are going to keep an eye on me. My strengths are my I.Q., work ethic and my desire to win.”

The in-state class of 2019 is already looking to be one of the strongest in recent years. Rivals.com already has listed nearly twice as many four-star recruits from Michigan in the class of 2019 than 2018. I expect Fletcher to be one the recruits that climbs the rankings once more people see his talent and recognize his potential.

Dantonio appreciates prospects that can excel in more than one sport. He has been supportive of players participating in more than one if they have the ability and so choose.

Class of 2018 defensive back commitment Davion Williams of Belleville will be one of the top basketball players in Michigan this winter. He has been informed by MSU coach Tom Izzo he will have an opportunity to join the basketball team once football season wraps up. It would not be a surprise if Fletcher is afforded the same opportunity if he ends up in Green and White.
